Our Observations, Your Feedback

Information Requirements Made Simple with Plannerly

Observations by Tashayani Ratnakumar, AcePLP Code Checker Squad

Tool Overview

Plannerly is a cloud-based BIM management platform designed to support multidisciplinary teams in defining and managing project requirements. It is typically used by BIM managers, coordinators, and modellers to replace static documents and scattered spreadsheets with structured, collaborative workflows.

Plannerly is not a design authoring tool. It functions as an all-in-one management platform divided into Scopes, Plans, Workflows, and Verify. Unlike traditional document-heavy methods, it focuses on centralizing project requirements into a single, shared source of information to ensure accountability and clarity across disciplines.

Where This Tool Fits in a BIM Workflow

Plannerly sits primarily in the planning and coordination stages of a BIM workflow.

Typical placement:

  • Upstream of model authoring (BEP and Scope definition)
  • As a bridge for information requirement alignment
  • Upstream of formal checking and validation
  • Iterative use during project execution to track task completion

In our experience, Plannerly provides a structured framework that can be actively mapped to automated rules and validation logic, creating a dynamic link between initial planning and final project execution.

Observations & Usability

Based on our review:

  • Interface: Plannerly features a clean and modern modular interface. While the initial learning curve can be steep for first-time users, the layout becomes intuitive once the user is familiar with the modular structure.
  • Reliability: We observed that content written directly in the platform sometimes disappeared, it is recommended to draft text externally before inputting it into the system.
  • Version Control: The tool effectively replaces sprawling Excel trackers and static PDFs, reducing version confusion by providing a living document environment.
  • Verification: The “Verify” module is a thoughtful addition for simple validation against defined scope, though it can occasionally produce minor inaccuracies that require a refresh or support.

Key Strengths Observed in Practice

From hands-on testing, we observed that:

  • The platform turns BIM Execution Plans (BEPs) into living documents that remain updated and actionable.
  • Collaboration tools like comments and notifications are highly practical for keeping project requirements transparent.
  • It works effectively as a structured decision log for multidisciplinary teams.
  • The modular setup allows for efficient organization of responsibilities and information requirements.

Limitations & Considerations

Some considerations users should be aware of:

  • Plannerly does not perform complex rule-based validation or clash detection like Solibri or Navisworks.
  • While it facilitates collaboration, it does not fully replace communication platforms like Microsoft Teams for day-to-day discussions.
  • The technical stability of the text editor requires users to take precautions to avoid rework.
  • The platform’s value is most significant on larger projects where the risk of misaligned documentation outweighs the subscription costs.

Best-Fit Use Cases

Plannerly is well suited for:

  • Dynamic BEP Management: Handling living documents that evolve throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Information Requirement Scoping: Defining clear “who, what, and when” for model deliverables.
  • Unified Project Frameworks: Establishing a single source of truth to replace scattered spreadsheets.
  • Team Alignment: Coordinating stakeholders who need a transparent view of project requirements without using authoring tools.

Relationship to Compliance & Checking Workflows

Plannerly can support compliance workflows indirectly by:

  • Helping teams resolve requirement gaps before formal checking begins.
  • Improving model consistency by mapping requirements to automated rules.
  • Providing the structured framework needed for downstream validation logic. However, Plannerly itself does not replace specialized checking software for complex compliance and should be seen as a supporting coordination tool.
